Ya, these Dune movies are so Americanized. But on the other hand, if the Islamic influence was more blatant, the director might end up with a Fatwa and a target on his back… so it’s safer to downplay the links to the Sunni’s in this era, though Frank Herbert did not downplay them and copied a lot from the Sunnis.

I'm planning on reading the original, and I do wonder how the Muslim readers who really connected with the original material feel about the stripped down version... But Hollywood is going to Hollywood and they likely sidestepped more potential issues than they created by removing cultural references.

Agreed. I think the changes also improve the story from a storytelling perspective, making it seem more original. I remember reading the book for the second time as an adult, because I’d first read it as a child, and thinking wow, this is so blatantly about Iraq and Oil and Islam and the Middle East. And it made the whole thing seem less creative. Less original.
